PETRONAS continues to play a leading role in building Malaysia’s technical workforce through Vocational Institution Sponsorship and Training Assistance (VISTA) and its enhanced industry collaborative model, Vocational Integrated Skilled Talent Advancement (VISTA i-plus), programmes designed to equip young Malaysians with industry-ready Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) skills for the oil and gas industry.
At the core of these initiatives is a simple belief: Malaysia’s growth depends on skilled, resilient and world-class technical talent.
A TVET pathway built on real industry skills

VISTA i-plus aimed at transforming TVET learning ecosystem in Malaysia, where it focuses on hands-on, practical learning – ensuring trainees gain skills that match real workplace demands, especially in critical oil and gas roles such as welding, pipe fitting, scaffolding and others.
Trainees learn from recognised industry professionals and undergo certification-based training that prepares them for immediate employability. As one trainer emphasises, the programme instils attitude, skill and knowledge — the three pillars essential for success in technical work.
Over 14,000 skilled graduates since 1992

Since its launch, VISTA has produced more than 14,000 skilled workers who support Malaysia’s oil and gas industry. The new VISTA i-plus builds on this legacy through stronger partnerships with government agencies, industry players and over 30 TVET institutions nationwide.
This collaborative model ensures training remains relevant, standardised and responsive to industry needs.
Real voices from the programme

The VISTA i-plus experience is grounded in authenticity and experiential learning. Trainees and instructors describe TVET as a pathway that prioritises doing rather than memorising.

“I chose TVET because it prioritises practical training and hands-on learning over theory,” said Haizal Azril bin Yazi, a trainee from Kursus Kimpalan 6G, ADTEC JTM Kampus Pasir Gudang & Senai.

Another trainee, Muhammad Zol Harraz bin Zolkefli also mentioned, “In the programme, we learn from experienced offshore and onshore professionals – recognised experts in the industry.”

Meanwhile, trainee Nor Asyikin binti Che Ab Aziz from Institut Kemahiran Belia Negara (IKBN) Bandar Penawar, who also specialises in welding, says, “I was inspired by a female welder who was working offshore.”
The programme actively welcomes and supports female students, demonstrating that women can excel in these technical fields. It also emphasises personal discipline, as the work requires emotional steadiness and focus.
Building a future in oil and gas through TVET

VISTA i-plus provides SPM leavers with a structured, supported pathway — especially those who thrive in hands-on environments. Instructors encourage youth to understand their strengths and consider TVET as a meaningful and stable career route.
The oil and gas sector remains a major contributor to Malaysia’s economy, and VISTA i-plus ensures young Malaysians are well-prepared to join this essential workforce.
Together, we are driving a meaningful transformation in Malaysia’s TVET workforce.
