Highlights:

  • It is most important to know what you are most passionate about. It’s not all about books and extracurricular.
  • You should participate in activities that are related to your desired field rather than a plethora of random activities.
  • Don’t be afraid to be true to yourself. Write and talk about things that you are passionate about, from social media to music.
  • Stand up for yourself, no matter your stature or social standing during an argument or discussion. The smallest voices can say the biggest words.
  • Have a resilient mindset to get through the process of scholarship applications. Keep thinking that these scholarly bodies want to know who you are and you are the student they want to sponsor.
  • Having a script of answers for your interview would cause more damage than good. Be natural and treat it like a normal conversation.
  • Do a lot of research on different courses you might be interested in. You may be surprised to see how interconnected it is to your initial choice.
  • Don’t expect them to expect too much from you. You are still a teenager, the bigger picture is difficult to see at that age.
  • Having only stellar academic results is not enough to impress scholarly bodies. Extracurriculars and who you are as a person is also heavily weighed.
  • Being social media oriented is something that more companies understand is very important and therefore would be something their private scholarly sector would be looking at. Bear in mind that your social media presence is a mirror of your own personality and might affect your image towards the interviewers.
  • Only mention the most important and the most interesting parts of yourself and get to the point in your writing as there is a limited amount of words set.
  • It’s important to reach out to accomplished alumni and ask your institution for assistance. The best way to know about an experience is simply asking the people who have experienced it.
  • Don’t settle for people who under appreciate you. Look for people who can improve you and that can you can improve.
  • It is important to be a team player during group interviews. You are there to promote yourself but a leader does not just lift themselves but also those around them.
